- Y.S. Sharmila, Andhra Pradesh Congress
Y.S. Sharmila, the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief, has been exercising considerable influence over the Congress party in the state, with reports indicating that only names she proposes are being considered for key positions. This centralization of power has led to allegations of favoritism and discrimination against other party leaders. Critics argue that Sharmila’s approach may undermine the party's grassroots connections and hinder its long-term prospects.
Complaints about Sharmila’s leadership have surfaced, including concerns from some women leaders who believe they are being sidelined. Despite these grievances, the Congress high command has largely ignored the complaints, resulting in the removal of some dissenting members. Sharmila’s list of proposed candidates, which reportedly includes 60 names for crucial roles, is expected to shape the party’s strategy as it prepares for the next Assembly elections.
The controversy surrounding Sharmila’s leadership is compounded by the party’s lackluster performance in recent elections. Despite her assertive tactics, the Congress party failed to achieve the anticipated rise in its vote bank. Veterans like Sunkara Padma and Pallam Raju have attempted to address Sharmila’s shortcomings, but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful. As the Congress high command considers Sharmila’s proposed appointments, including the likely appointment of Raghuveera Reddy as vice-president, her leadership continues to be a point of contention within the party.
