Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has sparked a political conversation on the need for improvements in the state’s law and order system. His remarks, aimed at enhancing the policing framework in the state, were promptly addressed by the state’s top police official, Director General of Police (DGP) Dwaraka Tirumala Rao.

DGP Tirumala Rao, in a statement given the day after Pawan Kalyan’s comments, emphasized that the police department operates independently and without any political influence. He made it clear that the department's primary goal is to curb crime and maintain law and order, and that it does not bow to "political correctness" or external pressures.

“The police department works with the principle of curbing crime and maintaining law and order. We don’t operate with political correctness or related pressures on our head,” said the DGP, underlining the department's commitment to impartiality and professionalism in the execution of its duties.

Tirumala Rao also acknowledged that there were certain shortcomings in the previous government’s approach to policing, which he believed may have contributed to lapses in maintaining law and order. However, he assured the public that the current police department, under his leadership, follows a standard procedure based on concrete evidence in every case it handles.

His clarifying remarks came soon after Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha Vangalapudi echoed a similar sentiment, stating that she was taking Pawan Kalyan’s suggestion for improving law enforcement very seriously. Both the DGP and the Home Minister's statements seemed to signal a unified approach to addressing the law and order concerns raised by Pawan Kalyan, while also asserting the integrity and professionalism of the police department.

This exchange between political leaders and law enforcement has raised important questions about the functioning and accountability of the police in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the context of the ruling party’s commitment to political reforms. With both the Home Minister and the DGP affirming their readiness to address law and order issues head-on, it remains to be seen how these discussions will translate into tangible improvements on the ground.
