In a disappointing turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women’s freestyle 50 kg final after being found slightly overweight. Scheduled to face USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt, who secured a bronze in Tokyo 2020, Phogat's disqualification was confirmed when she weighed in a few grams over the 50kg limit on the morning of the final. Despite intensive efforts by her team to bring her weight down, she did not meet the required standard.

Phogat, who usually competes in the 53kg category, had been working to cut down to 50kg for this Olympics. Her disqualification comes after a series of impressive performances, including victories over Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba in the semi-final, Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinal, and reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the Round of 16. The Indian Olympic Association has expressed regret and requested privacy for Phogat, urging respect as they continue with other competitions.
