In a recent analysis, former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed his admiration for Joe Root as he celebrated the batter's impressive achievement of reaching his 35th Test century. This milestone sees Root surpassing legendary cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara, solidifying his status among cricket's elite. However, Vaughan was candid about Root's one notable weakness: his difficulty in facing India's top-ranked ICC Test bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.
Vaughan emphasized that Root "does not quite line up" against Bumrah, stating, "The only bowler he does not quite line up is Jasprit Bumrah, I reckon, but who does?" He noted that the ability to read the ball quickly out of the bowler's hand is crucial for a batter's success, highlighting Root's strategic thinking as he prepares to face Bumrah in future encounters, particularly during the upcoming Test series in England in June 2025.
Despite this challenge, Vaughan was optimistic about Root's capabilities, asserting that the England star has no significant weaknesses against either pace or spin bowling. "There is no obvious way to get him out... bowlers are waiting for him to make a mistake," Vaughan remarked.
Root's recent performance in the first Test against Pakistan in Multan has further showcased his talent, as he ended Day 3 unbeaten on 176, setting his sights on a sixth double century as Day 4 unfolds.
