1 Killed, 16 Injured in Shooting at Tuskegee University During Homecoming Celebration
TUSKEGEE, Alabama — One person was killed and sixteen others were injured early Sunday in a shooting at Tuskegee University, Alabama, as the historically Black university wrapped up its 100th homecoming celebrations, authorities and school officials report.
The victim who died was identified as 18-year-old La'Tavion Johnson, who was not affiliated with the university, according to a statement from the school. Johnson’s parents have been notified, confirmed the Macon County coroner.
Twelve individuals, including Tuskegee University students, were treated for gunshot wounds at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery. Four additional people sustained injuries unrelated to gunfire. Emergency responders, along with campus security and local law enforcement, quickly secured the scene.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation has launched an active investigation into the incident. "Special Agents received notification of multiple individuals shot on the campus of Tuskegee University at approximately 1:40 a.m.," the agency noted, adding that they are continuing to gather details about the events leading up to the shooting.
In connection with the incident, Jaquez Myrick, 25, was arrested and charged with possession of a machine gun. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Myrick was apprehended while leaving the area with "a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device." Authorities have not confirmed whether Myrick is suspected in the shooting itself.
Tuskegee University announced that classes would be canceled on Monday to facilitate the ongoing investigation. In a message to the university community, the administration expressed sorrow over the tragic event following the homecoming festivities and stated that grief counselors would be available on Monday in the campus chapel for students seeking support.
"The administration joins the students in mourning after such a joyous weekend," the statement reads. "Students should not hesitate to reach out to the Student Health Center if they prefer private support."
